The Bluebird series is one of Nissans oldest, starting back in 1959 with the 310 model. This first generation were still powered by the Nissan built version of BMC’s B series engine, a throwback to the Austin A40 and A55 Cambridge which Nissan had built in an agreement with Austin during the 1950’s. The 310 underwent minor changes to become the 311 in ‘61 and again in ‘62 to become the 312. The 410 model of ‘63, whilst fresh looking with it’s new Italian styling was still dated underneath and used an improved version of the 312’s OHV engine. The 410 was relatively short lived as it was replaced in ‘64 with the improved 411 model.

The big success came in ‘67 with the launch of the legendary 510 series. This model was a huge hit worldwide and had a high specification for a small family car. It featured the new L series OHC and boasted independent suspension all round. So successful was the 510 that it continued to be built alongside it’s replacement, the 610 between 1971 and 1973. New to the 610 Bluebird line was a long wheelbase version with straight six power, the 2000GT. This longer, larger engined version, was continued in the 810 model that followed in 1976 and the later 910 series from 1979. The last Bluebird to be sold badged as a Datsun was the U11 model of 1983. This FWD model was the last proper Bluebird to be sold in the UK as all subsequent versions sold here were re-badged T12 (or T72) Stanzas.
